Self-reflection on Google Translate learning

Q: In the past, have you used Google Translate before? If so, what did you use it for?
A: When I was in junior high school, I was introduced to Google Translate and began to make good use of it. Ever since then, I have been using Google Translate (GT) on a frequent basis in my daily life. And due to its convenience, I used GT to translate words or phrases from one language to another whenever needed. Take my French course, for example. From time to time, we were required to look up some French words and finish homework in French.

Q: One GT training session was conducted in the beginning of the semester. Was it enough for you?
A: Personally, one GT training session is enough for all of us because I believe students nowadays use GT more than other generations. Even though some of us are not that good at identifying the wrongly used words but at least we are all familiar with GT very much.

Q: What strategies did you employ when you use GT for subtitle translation?
a. Translate based on different units: words, phrases, short texts, paragraphs, or the entire text;
b. Perform inversed translation: translate from the L1 to the L2 and vice versa
c. Use Google Translate Phrasebook to store common phrases.
A: I employed a and b strategies at the same time when I use GT for subtitle translation. By applying these two strategies, I could double-check whether the context of GT was accurate or not.

Q: What strategies did you employ when you use GT for Bantaoyao translation?
A. Translate based on different units: words, phrases, short texts, paragraphs, or the entire text;
B. Perform inversed translation: translate from the L1 to the L2 and vice versa
C. Use Google Translate Phrasebook to store common phrases.
A: I used both A and B strategies at the same time. Actually, besides these two strategies, I also used Cambridge dictionary to look words up so that I could make sure that all the words used in translation were appropriate enough.

Q: Based on the translation generated by Google Translate, how did you try to refine your translation? Do you think peer discussions and teacher feedback were helpful when you refined the GT output?
A: After checking the grammar of the translation provided by GT, I always looked some words up to ensure the accuracy of the context. I found Cambridge dictionary very useful and easy to use as well. Moreover, in my opinion, I think peer discussions at some point benefit us in many ways. Firstly, this provides us with opportunities to check other's work. Secondly, we can receive numerous suggestions from other classmates. In this view, I think peer discussions have been very helpful.

Q: Based on the two videos you translated, what machine-generated errors did you observe while using Google Translate? Give some examples.
A: When I translated the first subtitle translation, that's really a nightmare. For example, when I tried to translate the sentences "電腦工程師出身的他,千算萬算,算不到老天爺根本不想讓他算,高海拔的茶區優勢變成劣勢。"into English. The result was totally inaccurate and couldn't be used. To solve the problem, I needed to spend more time translating on my own.

Q: Based on the Bantaoyao transcript you translated, what machine-generated errors did you observe while using Google Translate? Give some examples.
A: I didn't really encounter any serious problem during the process of translating Bantaoyao transcript.

Q: When was Google Translate most helpful for the translation tasks that you’ve practiced in this course?
A: If I remember rightly, I think it's the time I did subtitle translation 2 that I enjoyed GT the most. As the process of translation was smooth, I finished my translation in a rather short period of time. Thanks to the high rate of accuracy that GT offered, I didn't have to correct a lot of errors.

Q: When was Google Translate least helpful for the translation tasks that you’ve practiced in this course?
A: When I was dealing with the context of Lishan Tea, I found the GT almost useless since it made a number of mistakes that I had to check and rectify them on my own. However, I still used the GT to complete the task. Also, I found that doing translation line by line more accurate than doing it paragraph by paragraph.

Q: Overall, how did you feel about using GT to assist translation in this course?
A: All in all, I would say GT has been very helpful and user-friendly for everyone. We have been using GT from the beginning of the semester, so I guess everyone has a better understand of the use of GT.

Q: Other comments about using Google Translate for the subtitle translation and Bantaoyao transcript translation practice.
A: The experience of translating Bantaoyao transcript is very special as I have never done that kind of work before. And I believe this has shown me how tough and challenging that being a translator can be. Because of all the practices we have had so far, I have a better understand of translation (either oral translation or written translation). And in the end of semester, I would like to show my appreciation for Dr. Sherry as she had put so many efforts into this course and arranged a wonderful tour for us! Again, thanks a million.
